  • In The Karate Kid, Johnny Lawrence was the classic 80s bully - a cocky, headband-wearing villain we loved to hate. But then Cobra Kai came along and flipped the script. Suddenly, Johnny wasn’t the bad guy anymore… he was just a guy who peaked in high school, trying to make sense of his life decades later.
In this video, we dive deep into how Cobra Kai pulled off one of the most surprising character redemptions in TV history. From his cringeworthy attempts to navigate the 21st century to his heartfelt mentorship of Miguel, Johnny's journey is equal parts hilarious, tragic, and genuinely inspiring.
We’ll explore the writing, the performance by William Zabka, and why giving Johnny a second chance made Cobra Kai so special.
👉 Whether you were Team Daniel or Team Johnny back in the day, this one's for you.

In The Karate Kid, he was a classic 80's bully. But in Cobra Kai, he was just an average guy who made mistakes and went down the wrong path in life. I love how the show turned a classic bully of a stereotype into an actual human character. And you're right; this is one of the greatest redemption stories in TV history.

      and he cancelled Hawk's autism.
HawK: "The doctor said I might be on the spectrum."
Johnny: "I don't know what that is, but get the hell off it pronto."

There's actually a workable theory here. First, if it was actual asthma, building upper body strength really does help alleviate it. But a more likely theory is that Miguel was suffering from anxiety that was misdiagnosed as asthma (it presents a lot of the same symptoms). As he got more confident, he lost his anxiety.
Of course, that's after-the-fact working it out. I can do it with his miraculously healing spine injury, too. ;p

It was ultimately a redemption story of Johnny Lawrence. He learnt his lessons and made sure he took his second chance. Really enjoyed it.

Genuinely beautifully written video, man. Johnny Lawrence is such a relatable character. It's been a while since we've had a character like him in TV, who has such a rich, patient and optimistic character arc. Johnny became a father to Miguel, Robby and Laura, got married to a genuinely graceful woman, and he became the World Champion. His arc goes to show that it's never too late for a second chance, no matter how far you've fallen, how old you are or how deep your trauma is. Cobra Kai is such an inspiring show.

I actually didn't hate Johnny in The Karate Kid. They make it clear by the end of the movie that it wasn't him but rather his teacher that was the bad guy. Plus no teenage guy is gonna be thrilled when the new kid in town starts dating the girl they're in love with.

I watched the whole video and gave it a thumbs up! Johnny showed his good side even in The Karate Kid (1984) towards the end. Unfortunately, that goodness was met with little if no reward. It was entertaining to see him develop into a better man slowly as he was swimming upstream.

What I loved most about Cobra is that, perhaps with the exception of Terry Silver, there are no clear villains, and perhaps with the exception of Daniel Larusso, neither are there any clear heroes.
Practically all characters in the show, both protagonists and antagonists, show elements of both good and bad.
All the people we hated in the movies (Chozen, Barnes, and even Kreese) were shown to have a much more human and vulnerable side in Cobra Kai. Some just took more time for it to show. Even Terry Silver, who was perhaps the only irredeemable person in the franchise, had a huge vulnerable side which at least makes it understandable why he does the bad things he does, even if it's still un-condonable (no spoilers, for those who have yet to watch).
On the contrary, all the people in Cobra Kai who were for the most part "good people", even they had significant moments of being the bad guy.
Cobra Kai is great simply because there is no black-and-white depiction of heroes and villains that you typically see in movies & tv shows.

It's a shame that the writing for Silver regressed to having him a pure villain. He was much more interesting and well written in Season 4.

I've honestly loved Johnny since 1984. I'm a a 45 year 3rd degree black belt in Taekwondo, Johnny is basically my mirror image. I'm is of an asshole. I'm definitely flawed, and unreasonable at times, but I have a beautiful wife and a 15 year old autistic son that mean the world to me.

Can't believe over 40 years later and continuing from it, that this series also became a classic.
Just wish they would have done some more Easter Eggs/ References.
Barney Stinson/ Neil Patrick Harris from How I Met Your Mother.
Wax On, F Off comedy skit from Funny or Die.
Sweep the Leg performance by No More Kings.
Most of all Julie Pearce making an appearance.
Disappointed these four were not put in the series, but hopefully a movie, that continues one in some way does.
