My mean is 4.9 and I'd consider myself to be pretty harsh. I rarely give out 10s and even if I liked a show I still might only give it a 5.

Generous. Sometimes when I think about how I would rate an anime if I had the same expectations than when it comes to movies or books I always realize I rate anime one or two points higher than I should.

I think I am one of the most "fair" scorers on the website. I tend to give every series the benefit of the doubt, but I also always consider and point of the flaws or short comings of even the shows that I adore.

I can make a pretty good case for pretty much all my scores, in a way that the vast majority of people would at the very least consider it reasonable.

On a side note, I did not expect the creator of this thread to be someone who has seen less than 20 anime. I feel like that's really not enough data to know how harsh or generous you are with scores.

@Atm0SS that doesn't add up

you are either lying, or you have seen a LOT of bad anime.

Got almost 1,900 anime racked up since 2012 and have a no-drop rule, coupled with a mean score of 4.29. I won't say I'm a harsh scorer. I'm more of someone who tries to be fair and look at everything from story to characters to premise. If I don't care about the characters or the story by the the time I've finished it, that's worrisome for me. Sure, I've deliberately watched my fair share of bad anime for kicks and giggles, but I go in with a neutral and almost indifferent impression for any anime I pick up. How my neutrality is affected depends by the time I'm finished with it.

@Alpha_1_Zero Mars red is a great show!

There is so much detail, and thought put into it's directing, style, art, writing and story structure, if you give it a real chance, and look at the sheer number of things it does extremely well, you'll find a lot to love about it.

anyone that I have suggested mars red to, while giving them an idea on what to look for, has come back telling it was indeed a hidden gem.

I don't think that I consider myself harsh or generous in that sense :)
It can only look harsh due to how the system works. For example, 10/10 is reserved for one most favorite piece of medium and 9/10 is reserved for favorites, which means that a "regular" anime can only receive as high as 8/10. Sure, it's harsh compared to people who give high scores to everything they liked or thought was good, but that's just how it is - there is no malicious intent behind it or desire to be harsh. There are just too many numbers to deal with lol and that's one way of making them have a distinct purpose.

My current mean score for anime is 5.45 and 5.80 for manga (both will become lower after I properly re-adjust some of the scores).
Anime mean score suffered greatly due to my past experiences, mostly because of all the battle shounen side content that I watched in the past - it was meant to be rated horribly low, and I can't just pretend that I never watched it and keep it off my list.

I honestly stopped caring how high or low it might look - as long as the overall system I developed for myself functions nicely and makes sense to me. After all, the purpose for having a profile on MAL was to create a personal hierarchy using scores and track new things comfortably, not something detached and impersonal.

5.21 for manga

I think I'm fair. Mean score should be around 5 because 5=average. You might argue that people mostly watch good shows so mean score should be a bit higher. But I personally used to watch literally everything before. I don't do that anymore and I'm noticing that it's getting higher very slowly.

My mean score is 6.37 but I consider myself quite harsh because I can't be bothered with mediocre anime. My ratings are inflated significantly because half of the shows I watched are classics.

I am both. Used to give lower scores to hated genres (like ecchi) and higher scores to favorite genres (like GAR. I still overrate them a bit though).
Now, 10+ years later, I try to force myself to be more objective. So, now I am a bit more generous. I try to find something good even in bad.

About my mean score, I dunno. I use whole 10 scores, unlike 98% of MAL users. I often have negative affinity with other users lol. More than 5% is considered by me as something respectable already.

My mean score is 5.52. With 5 being "average", it's literally above average. It could be a bit higher if not my hobby watching short random videos, obscure things and 1/10 worthy shows. My goal is to reach 6.0 some time.

I don't change my ratings so the previous shows which I have seen 9-10+ years ago will still increase my main score.

Pretty generous. Like, if I'm stuck between two scores, I'll often go up, rather than down. And I'm already trying to choose anime that I'll actually enjoy watching, so it's no wonder that most of what I watch gets at least 6+ from me.

My mean score is 6.96, probably pulled way down by all of the time I used to be willing to waste on anime that I didn't really like. I've been glad to see it inching up slowly in recent years.

Very harsh lol. It's like a 2.78 for the time being.

The more I saw anime and consumed various other media, the more I burnt myself out and nowadays, my scores definitely require me to enjoy the show a lot to be good. Production can matter at times but for me, the story and characters need to be great and I need to be enjoying it and there are so many seasonal anime that I have seen over 6-7 years that have failed in being fun and having characters/story I care for, which leads my ratings to be very low with many 1s-2s since I didn't find much value in the end. This even applied to shows I binged around a few years back. Many dreadful, boring fantasy stories or flat, underwhelming shounen anime or overly cringey, sugary and imbalanced romance anime all can affect it badly from season to season (besides the amount I have already binged beyond those seasonals). Nowadays, I don't even talk much for shows I rate very low (whether airing or stuff I saw years prior) since it is a burnout to even argue about that. I do look back at older scores from time to time and even now, maybe a couple of scores might feel a bit outdated then and deserve a raise at times so not too much of a difference would be made nowadays. I know it's harsh but it's basically near impossible to magically change myself to be suddenly and genuinely generous and nice.

I used to Give a 10 to only anime that gave me radically intense goosebumps, Like Overlord and BNHA Movie
But now, I give a 10 to Every Anime (And it's OVA, Specials) if it has an extremely immersive and deep story that made me feel bliss or if it made me cry,
Though I do deduct points if there are things I don't like, (e.g. I like ecchi, but Shinmai Maou has explicit sexual acts)
I'd say I'm more on the generous side

Very generous. A bit too much so I think. I find I base my scores based on whether I'm amused, rather than if the show is actually good. I turn my brain off for most anime I watch anyways but even so, I look at how high some of this shit is and I think, compared to movies at least, I should probably be harsher. I'm a lot harsher with anime's that I think will be good than with anime's that I come in not expecting much

Somewhere in the middle. It's a case by case thing. I'm just as likely to give something I thought was good a lower score because of some issues I had as I am to give something I thought was bad a higher score because it was a fun watch. It makes sense to me.

The thing I don't do is rate things I dropped, which would have a pretty good impact on my mean score if I did.

Generous with the anime I like, harsh with the anime I don't enjoy: that's what having a high standard deviation means. The more I use the full rating scale, the better my list will portray my taste.

I'd say I'm also generous with the anime I drop too early, since I leave them unrated even though the vast majority of them would have definitely gotten a 1 or a 2 from me.

My mean score is 8.45 … with more than 300+ completed anime and I don’t drop shows , I’ve been watching anime for like 11 years

I’m probably one of the highest scorer in mal history comparing to my years of watching , or are their more people like me?

My reason is simply bc 85% of the time I choose shows I know I’ll like ( especially the last 2 years when I started watching way more than I used to ) , so I’m rarely disappointed with my choices

I consider myself quite generous (mean score 7.25). Nowadays, most of the time I give shows that i finished scores between 6-10 (shows that i still enjoyed /did have a good time watching, regardless of it being objectively good or bad), and i don't give shows that I finished 5 or less score anymore (shows that i objectively consider bad and also didn't enjoy watching).

It's because as you grow older, you only have so much time to watch stuff so i make sure i'll only watch shows that i'm confident i can finish (shows that i find fun even if it's bad/trashy), even if it'd take ages to complete.

Probably generous. Mean score 7.3.

6 is where I typically land for shows that meet the bare minimum of "did I enjoy it more than I disliked it?"

Nowadays if I dislike a show or just find it not my taste, then I usually drop it, in which case I don't rate it because I don't like to pass judgment if I haven't seen the whole thing.

I bet if I went back and rewatched the older shows I have in the 6-7 range I'd probably put a lot of them lower now lol.
